Children's Hearing Tests
Good hearing is vital for normal speech and language development in children. We speak what we hear. Often children will do the following if they are not hearing well:
- be inattentive
- listen to TV at loud levels
- have delayed speech and language development
- If you are concerned, book a hearing test for your child. You will be in the best care with our Audiologist who has over 16 years experience in the field of audiology.
Children Aged 9 Months- 2 Years
Children in this age group are too young to tell us which ear they hear sounds from and often can not handle wearing headphones. As a result, we test children's hearing using Visual Reinforcement Audiometry.
The child simply sits on their parent/carer's lap and listens to sounds. When they hear a sound they naturally respond to it by turning their head towards the sound.
Children Aged 2 - 6 Years
Children between the ages of 2 years and 6 years, who can handle wearing headphones have their hearing tested using Play Audiometry. During this test, the child responds to sounds when they hear them. The response can be an action such as putting a block in a tub, a peg into a board, or building a tower with pegs. Older children are able to press a button when they hear a sound. The child must be able to handle having headphones on their ears to do this test and respond consistently to the sound, in order to find out the individual hearing ability of each ear.
